Tattoo Aftercare for Healthy, Long-Lasting Artwork
Getting a tattoo is exciting, but taking care of it afterwards is essential. Proper tattoo aftercare helps your skin heal well and keeps your tattoo looking vibrant for years.
The First Few Hours
After your tattoo is finished, it will be covered with a protective bandage. Keep this bandage on for two to six hours. When you remove it, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing.
Days One to Three
During the first few days, your tattoo needs to stay clean and protected.
Wash your tattoo two to three times a day using mild soap.
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or a tattoo-specific ointment. Too much product can slow healing.
Avoid soaking your tattoo in baths, pools, or hot tubs. Quick showers are fine.
Wear loose, soft clothing to prevent irritation.
Days Four to Fourteen: Peeling and Itching
By day four, your tattoo may start peeling or flaking, similar to a sunburn. It is normal and part of the healing process.
Do not pick or scratch the peeling skin.
Keep moisturizing lightly to reduce dryness and itching.
Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight to prevent fading and irritation.
Weeks Two to Four
After peeling ends, your tattoo begins to settle into the skin. The colors may look slightly dull at first but will return as your skin fully heals.
Continue moisturizing regularly.
Avoid scrubbing or exfoliating the tattoo.
Keep protecting it from the sun.
Long-Term Tattoo Care
Even after your tattoo is healed, ongoing care keeps it looking its best:
Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed tattoos.
Moisturize regularly to maintain healthy skin and vibrant ink.
Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged soaking.
Tips from Experienced Tattoo Artists
Stick to fragrance-free products. Even natural lotions can irritate.
Follow your artist's instructions. They know your tattoo and skin best.
Be patient. Healing time depends on size, location, and skin type.
